The stone block at the Honolulu Memorial reads "In these gardens are recorded the names of Americans who gave their lives in the service of their country and whose earthly resting place is known only to God"
Fred was likely flying a P-47 type plane during his final mission, although his Missing Air Crew Reports (MACR) could not specify the exact type or serial number. He was executing an attack near Kyushu Island off Matsuyama, Japan when his aircraft crashed over the waters. The MACR issued for Fred’s downed aircraft stated, “Crashed into water in low level strafing attack on enemy shipping off Matsuyama. Members of Flight orbited area for several minutes but could find no trace of pilot or plane.” His group circled around looking for him but could not find him and had to pull back from the battle site.
Frederick Anderson Harrington met his fate on the day of August 8th, 1945 likely as soon as he crashed. Fred reached the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and for his service and ultimate sacrifice to his country, was posthumously awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. He is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing in Honolulu. |
